Sometimes, with hexes, your character kind of jimmys side to side to go in a straight line. If you allow figures to move diagonally, you actually have 8 adjacent spaces to move into, rather than 6, which again offers more realistic movement, and gives you more tactical options. But I don't see how that could possibly matter. I assume it has something to do with the fact that they want you to move across the faces of each square. This mimics real life so simply, I just don't get why so many rule sets require you to be hadicapped for moving across a space diagonally. For example, if you had to move around the perimeter of the building, it should take you almost twice as long. If there were obstacles in the middle, then that should be the only reason that you wouldn't go diagonally. For example, if the character you are assuming is Rogue (I think it is Parallax) has 4 move, he/she should be able to move diagonally across the roof. In real life, if you cut across an area digonally, YES, you should get to the center faster than if you take an indirect route. Yet, I don't really see what the problem is. In most games played with squares, they ask you to count a diagonal move as 2 spaces, presumably to counter the problem that you mention Eclipse. You know, I've personally never understood why this is an issue.

I really prefer hexes as there's no goofy tricks when counting spaces like this, but there's nothing really wrong with this system either. If she moves diagonally, it only takes 2. For example, for Rogue there (that is Rogue, right?), if she moves along the grid to the center of the building, it would take 4 move. The only problem with Square Grids is that they create a half distance diagonal situation that's a bit odd. That really is awesome, and I'd love to play on it.

I didn't know how to sum up all my thoughts.so I stole IAmBatman's Man, there's even a train! And a bus! And a dumpster! You need to tell me where to get that stuff, and we need to get on the destructible item cards! so, yeah, I can't think of any way it'd break things, and I sure think it'd be fun to play on that map! I know if I was hanging out with you, I'd be all for it. The main things would be that figures are easier to attack (more access to them) and area attacks like Hulk's stomp can potentially affect more figures, but so what? Technically Hulk could've been adjacent to extra figures over 6 if you finagled things right with small figures on castle ladders anyway. Second - although hexes would be the preferred thing, just so you can mix with your existing tiles and what not if nothing else, I don't think you'll run into a terrible amount of issues. First off - that's an awesome looking display and I'm completely jealous of all that cool city terrain.
